SEX & CINEMA It's been 10 editions of a film festival with a programming dedicated to young emergent talents. To mark the date we thought of an unforgettable main theme, that spans all sections of the Festival, but with an emphasis on the Official Selection. Miguel Àngel Barroso is in charge of the exceptional curatorship of the cinematographic program. The spanish essayist and film critic, with published work on Pasolini, Antonioni and a historic contextualization of the erotic and pornographic cinema, picked some of the more emblematic works of the genre, giving special attention to the Italian Tinto Brass and a special incidence on the classics, but also with a much needed approach to the actuality. From "Deep Throat", to "Behind The Green Door" - the latter with the projection of the only 35mm copy existing in Portugal -, passing through "Emmanuelle" to "In The Realm of The Senses", or from "SuperVixens" to "Intimacy", the guiding line is simple: Sex.
Also integrated in the main theme is the program X Femmes 1 and 2, that the Circuito Off, from Venice, brings to Fundão. The Italian Festival - that also signals in 2009 its tenth birthday - shows two sections dedicated to the female orgasm, composed by short films made by female directors of many nations, that got together in the Secondsexe project invitated by the french producer Sofilles. Arielle Dombasle, Lola Doillon, Laetitia Masson, Héléna Noguerra, Caroline Loeb, Tonie Marshall, Anna Mouglalis, Zoe Cassavetes, Blanca Li and Eva Midgley are the names behind the cameras.
Also standing out is the "Destricted" project, with his short films made by consecrated authors, dedicated, of course, to sex, but also to its interaction with art. Larry Clarke Matthew Barney, Sam Taylo-Wood, Marina Abramovic, Marco Brambilla, Gaspar Noé and Richard Prince are the teasers on duty.
HEINEKEN OPEN SPACE
THIS IS… ATP RECORDINGS Beyond the festival, All Tomorrow's Parties is also a record, film and videoclip label, all to be seen at the Open Space, and also on Moagem's big screen, with the national premiere of the ATP FILM documentary - a trip through the parallel universe of the All Tomorrow's Parties' cult festival.
CARTE BLANCHE...CIRCUITO OFF The roster of the 2009 edition of the Venice's Festival Circuito Off will stand out. The event also commemorates its tenth aniversary and joins IMAGO in the festivities.
CINEMA 16 – WORLD SHORT FILMS The series Cinema 16, from Warp Films, already passed by IMAGO and makes its comeback now with his latest chapter. The project mentor, Luke Morris, will be in Fundão to present "World Short Films", an excellent compilation with some of the most important short films of the last decade, some of them part of the Festival's competition throughout the years, some of them award winners. Andrea Arnold, Guillermo Del Toro, Park Chan Wook, Guy Maddin or Jane Campion are part of the list.
DOCS MUSICAIS Musical documentary section that gathers some of the most interesting productions of the genre by the fourth year in a row. Justice Curtis Mayfield, Belle & Sebastian, the exclusive "Girl Singer Needed" - purposefully edited by Marisa Privitera for IMAGO - or the Portuguese premiere of "No Cross, No Crown", about the post-Katrina impact on the musical scene of New Orleans, are part of a menu that counts also with the presence on screen of the spanish Surfin' Bichos, the Ramones and Chet Baker.
Also on the Open Space we have the MUVIES.PT section, dedicated to the best Portuguese videoclips of the year and the program PURE SEX VIDEOCLIPS, with a selection made by the Catalan director Santi Aguado and integrating the Sex & Cinema program.
SOUND & VISION EXPERIENCE
ATP RECORDINGS SHOWCASE The label branch of the All Tomorrow's Parties Festival finally arrives at IMAGO with two concerts and a DJ Set made by the project's director, BARRYHOGAN(UK), that make a promise to go straight into History:
The NOTWIST (GER) – Live Act It's the germans premiere in Portuguese soil that, although they make records for 20 years, only in 2002 have definitely conquered an unquestionable place in the international stage and were even one of the greatest responsible for what is called Indietronic. "Neon Golden" was the album responsible for the catapultation of The Notwist to another dimension, and since then, much because of the members' involvement in thousands of other projects (Lali Puna, Console, MS John Soda, 13 & Dog or The Tied & Tickled Trio), there is only one more phonographic milestone to consider, the beautiful "The Devil, You + Me", from 2008. So, it is expected a really special and emotion-filled concert.
ALEXANDER TUCKER (UK) – Live Act This Briton is an expert in creating sound experiences through his drones that seem infinite, the voice layers that stand on top of each again and again like there was no tomorrow, the apparently fragile classical structures of song that mutate into small pieces of psych folk... Another premiere in Portugal.
DJ YODA – LIVE AV SET What if, instead or records, the DJ mixed music and image using DVDs? And what if the soundtracks of unforgettable movies were the basis of a performance and, at the same time, the same images of those movies were mixed in real time and simultaneously with the sound? It's not impossible. It is real and it is DJ Yoda in all his splendor. One more first performance, long awaited in out country, from the one that is considered one of the best contemporary mixers. You CAN'T MISS IT!
CONCERT-MOVIE “NAUGHTY OLDIES”, BY THE MIXED CHOIR OF BEIRA INTERIOR, DIRECTED BY LUÍS CIPRIANO (30') Three short films from the 20s, from unknown authors and a with strong sexual charge, serve as inspiration for an original composition by the conductor Cipriano, interpreted by the Mixed Choir of Beira Interior. Ages 18 and above only.
CONCERT-MOVIE “SEXY 70 - MUSIC INSPIRED BY THE BRAZILIAN SACANAGEM MOVIES OF THE 1970”, by Che (BR). The name says it all. The brazilian Che is fan of the porno-crap movies that proliferated in his country in the 70s and 80s. The soundtracks of those mythic productions always fascinated him. Unable to get the rights to edit a compilation with some of those sound moments, Alexandre Caparroz - his true name - didn't hesitate and decided to make his own imaginary soundtracks. The result is Sexy 70. This show also integrates the programming of the event MOAZZ - JAZZ IN FUNDÃO.
Mr. Francis (PT/ES) – Live Act They come from Barcelona and are a covers band that, much more than reproducing, translate their own personality into the music of others, in the line of the french group Nouvelle Vague. What was funk is now rumba or tango, what was pop rock is now bossanova and the purest jazz turns into swing and goes i into funk.
10 YEARS OF IMAGO – FILMBOX From October, the Eugénio de Andrade Municipal Library, in Fundão, will make the Filmbox IMAGO available to all population. A search tool that will make available for viewing, in a first stage, the awarded movies of the history of the Festival and, later, all the films that were selected for the competition throughout the years.
Q&A Miguel Ángel Barroso, curator of the Sex & Cinema program, Barry Hogan, from ATP Recordings, Luke Morris, from Warp Films, are some of the guests available for a conversation with our audience about their work.
Exhibition Visão Filmes, the mythic adult films distributor in Portugal, will show our audience in the Moagem space, some of their promotional material about erotic and pornographic cinema of the last decades.
SOCCER 5th International 7-a-side Soccer Match – IMAGO vs Guests & Journalists – Friday 02/10, 11h00, Fundão Sports Complex.
