Just good times: Chesterfield winery welcomes autumn

CHESTERFIELD – Wine, music and craft lovers took advantage of the fine weather on Saturday to stop by the Wild Pickins Winery Fall Festival just outside Chesterfield.

Several groups made the day a family affair, including two brothers from Edwardsville who joined their wives for wine and good cheer in the laid-back atmosphere of the country winery along Route 111 in the Illinois.

Troy Schmidt has been at the Fall Festival for three consecutive years.

“It seems like the weather has always been good and our women like to look around and spend money,” Troy said. “The wine has always been very good. Pretty much the only place I drink wine is when I come here.

Troy’s older brother Bill was experiencing the Fall Festival for the first time.

“My wife was here last year and she told me how much fun she had,” Bill said. “I said ‘okay honey, if it means that much to you, I’ll be there.’ It turned out to be quite nice.

While the Schmidt brothers sipped drinks and listened to live music, their wives checked out the dozens of vendor tents selling handmade items.

“I look at all these painted signs and artwork,” Laura Schmidt said. “And I enjoy a lot of good wine.”

Laura’s sister-in-law, Rana Schmidt, had her eye on “everything that falls”.

“I’m here to have fun with my family and friends and enjoy the beautiful day,” Rana said. “It’s just beautiful here. We always choose a beautiful day. The music, the food, it’s just good times.

Wild Pickins Winery was established in 2012. It features a country setting with wooded vineyard views, a selection of food, beer and wine, and shaded patio seating.
