Understanding Columbus a century ago (1920–25), the Red Scare, SACCO & VANZETTI (1920–27) and now as he is removed from his perch in Newark, NJ (2020). Centenary of SACCO & VANZETTI from 1920-27 to Century 21.
An armed robbery at a shoe factory in 1920 in South Braintree Massachusetts for which Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti (Sacco and Vanzetti) were arrested. Terrified, they spoke little English. They have become a media sensation of the radical left and hard rock conservatives in Boston. They endured 2 infamous ordeals. They were found guilty of “guilty conscience” and executed by electric chair in 1927.
In 1925-1927, the Giuseppe Verdi Society of Newark commissioned a statue of Columbus for Washington Park on Broad St. These statues demonstrated their commitment to Newark and America. Americans also adopted tenor Enrico Caruso (1873-1921) who bridged opera and popular music to become one of the best-selling recording artists of all time. The Italians repressed their language in America. My mother was reprimanded by her grandfather for never speaking Italian outside their home. They all struggled to learn English. It was considered anathema to speak Italian in public.
Newark, Italy and me (Lulu Books 2019) over a century with a retrospective and prospective vision from 1920 to 2021.
The dawn of Nevarca (Newark’s Little Italy) from 1885, when they fled the economic hardships and poverty of the impoverished region of Mezzo-giorno. Southern Italy (Il Sud) was the raison d’être of Little Italy and Newark’s America.
Phonetically, Nevarca, was a contraction of southern Italy for their New Ark in America. Antonio Caruso (my great-grandfather) arrived in the 1880s and became a grocer in the 1st Quarter of 8th Avenue (now the Central District). His wife’s maiden name was Tuosto. They all attended St. Lucia Church and their 9 children worked in the grocery store to help the family earn a living.
Italian immigrant Italians have suffered deportations and discrimination. This is in part due to the strikes of 1912, 1913 and 1919 in Paterson and Lowell Massachusetts. The deportations began the FBI career of J Edgar Hoover, 24. The Red Fear began after the Russian Revolution in 1917-1920. Labor activists like Elizabeth Gurley Flynn, originally from Ireland, spoke at the American Labor Museum Botto House during the Paterson strike in 1913. Russian emigrant Emma Goldman was also active in the pursuit of workers’ rights and a living wage. She was then deported to Russia.
In Italy, the other elephant was Mussolini (1883-1945) who came to power in 1922. COLUMBUS was a manifestation of anti-fascism in Newark at that time. 11 immigrants were lynched in New Orleans. Yet the Italians stayed here as Italy turned to fascism.
They also praised Columbus around this time in part because of the popular exhibits at the Columbus World’s Fair which marked their identity as Americans in a foreign land. The Statue of Liberty welcomed these refugees to New York Harbor and Ellis Island from their impoverished lives in southern Italy. The music of Caruso and Verdi still shines as legends in Italian culture and in all operas around the world.
The Newark Sunday Call published a striking photo of my Caruso family in 1925. The Irish journalist called them “clan,” an endearing Irish expression foreign to gli Italiani (Italians). As an Irish-Italian and now a bridge between the two cultures. When I was asked if I was “Irish” at LaScala, and later when I conducted Tom Murphy’s Irish play The Gigli Concert in Italian in Rome.
As an Irish-Italian, I am a bridge between the two cultures, especially when people ask me if I was “Irish” in LaScala. Later, I made my European debut by staging Tom Murphy’s Irish play, Gigli’s Concert in Italian in Rome. As a child, I remembered a few Italian expressions, but nothing else.
Frustrated, after my MA at American University in Washington, DC, I started taking Italian classes at Bloomfield and Belleville Adult Schools before my season at LaScala and began to rediscover my Irish roots. Italian complicated here and in Italy since.
We are now offering SACCO & VANZETTI shorts with signing programs for Newark, Italy and me (Lulu) in 21/22.
