Profile Theater presents The Elaborate Entry of Chad Deity by Kristoffer Diaz as the first play of the 2022-23 25th Anniversary Season: The American Generation. A Pulitzer Prize finalist, Chad Deity’s elaborate entry marries heartbreaking comedy, one of the smartest critiques of the American dream, and its access to BIPOC and first-generation Americans…and professional wrestling.
In the wild world of professional wrestling, bruh, there are rules to follow and sacrifices to make! But how far will you go, and what will you give up to live your dream? Mace – a good wrestler, but not the champion – struggles with how racial identities are manipulated, distorted and stereotyped for entertainment purposes in an industry he loves. In this quirky look at a “great American pastime”, fame (and hilarity) can be found in the ring, kid, but here there are winners and losers in more ways than you know. can imagine it. Chad Deity’s elaborate entry will take place at the Imago Theater from October 4-23, 2022.
Chad Deity’s elaborate entry is the first production of the two-year season of the American Generation of Profile exploring the works of Pulitzer finalist Kristoffer Diaz, “Insecure” and “Jane The Virgin” writer christopher oscar peña and by American Academy of Arts and Letters inductee Lauren Yee. The season will feature 9 full productions, including three world premieres and two commissions, including one in partnership with the Cornerstone Theater in Los Angeles. This is Profile’s biggest and most ambitious season to date.
Kristoffer Diaz is a playwright, librettist, screenwriter and educator. In 2010, he was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in Drama and the 2011 Obie winner for Best New Play. In addition to other stage work like Welcome to Arroyo’s, Diaz has worked on television series for HBO, ESPN, FX, Fox and Netflix. Our Artistic Director and Director of The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity, Josh Hecht, has this to say about Kristoffer Diaz:
“My stomach hurt from laughing so hard the first time I read Kristoffer Diaz’s fabulous play. And then tears welled up in my eyes with his punch from a final scene. Anyone who’s ever struggled with the personal, ethical and moral sacrifices one has to make to pursue the career one loves will recognize themselves in this piece Only the genius mind of Kris Diaz can transform the world of pro wrestling into a scathing critique of the relationship deeply complicated scene of America with its communities coming in. And if you’ve ever wanted to see some of your favorite actors power bombarded and kicked in the theater…you won’t want to miss this play!”
Portland audiences may know Diaz from his collaboration on the musical The Unfortunates which was originally produced and developed for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in 2013. On screen, Diaz adapted the musical RENT into an event in direct for Fox, and he was a writer and story editor for the hit Netflx series, GLOW.
The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity will be Kristoffer Diaz’s first work produced by Profile Theatre. This Pulitzer finalist and Obie-winning play has been well received by critics such as the LA Times, which said the play “jumps out of the frame from the forefront at every opportunity, urging, stabbing foot and body slapping with an immediacy that is more familiar with sporting events and rap concerts than with a traditional theatrical evening.”
This production will be Portland’s first, starring La’Tevin Alexander as Chad Deity, Duffy Epstein as EKO, Matthew Sepeda as Mace.
Chad Deity’s elaborate entry will be presented at the Imago Theater, October 4-23. Performances from Wednesday to Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Sunday matinees at 2 p.m. on 9, 16 and 23. Previews will take place on October 4, 5 and 6 at 7:30 p.m.
